I can't get enough of these old painted wooden cutouts--I just love the combination of graphic silhouette and weathered surface

but based on the small (early) indices believe likely 1870s or 80s

SOLD Wallie Schang Yank's Catcher Season 1921 Graphite Drawing on Board knotted basket Postmarked 1908I love the game of baseball, and everything about this drawing, most of all the interplay between the lines of Schang's fingers and the pattern of stitching on the baseball in his throwing hand. His pads and shin guards and glove are all pretty great too, plus facial expression that looks quintessentially a catcher's to me. Surely done by a baseball obsessed adolescent boy in 1921, who it gives me pleasure to imagine drawing all his favorite Yankees.
