Description

Massachusetts with John Twachtman

Approx 15 3/4" in diameter x 6 1/2" tall and in excellent antique condition

The sleeve appears to be adhered to the tintype and I quite like the effect of it as a frame

The wooden frame is not brand new but not very old

with wrapped pink and white patterned cloth (I think maybe silk) under the woven cotton on one and a gray knitted wool on the other

Shaw + Nodder 1792 Ambystoma Mexicanum (Mole Salamander) Hand-Colored Copper Engraving Emile Bluteau sculpture Massachusetts with John TwachtmanThis is a striking and wonderfully surreal looking hand colored Shaw and Nodder copper engraving of a Mole Salamader, or Ambystoma Mexicanum, dated 1792. Recently, I found a couple of Shaw and Nodder engravings that had been enhanced with additional watercoloring and annotation by a holder of them in the first half of the 19th century; that is not the case here, but those heightened my awareness of them, and then I found this one in Vermont this week.
