It was created by John Speed, one of Britain's most celebrated cartographers, based on an earlier map by Mercator and engraved by Jodocus Hondius for Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine." An inset in the top right shows the Orkney Islands, while further insets depict King James of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Queen Anne, and Prince Henry. Many towns
