I believe it likely dates to the late 19th century or so

which I've just fallen in love with

with dots and dash and x's etc used along with color to distinguish each layer

but when I do it's when I find something really special

The underside of the lid is marked Eaton's Arroweave, which I believe indicates it once housed fine stationary. Great now for stashing special letters and or trophies of the hunt, so to speak!
