I’d guess it dates from second half of the 19th century

with a pretty amazing line drawing with numbers that I guess once corresponded to a key detailing the various bugs

with some sand/dirt in the recesses between the spikes

Early Odd Fellows Shaking Hands Good Luck Horseshoe biographical drawings most typically used for viewingI believe this Odd Fellows horseshoe once read Luck along the bottom, but somehow (it would seem it was deliberately) the Luck piece is gone. Thus, it feels more as if carrying a message of good citizenship and friendship, which is certainly more within one's control! It seems there have been multiple iterations of good luck horseshoes of a similar ilk, but I believe this is an early one, late 19th very early 20th c, painted cast iron I believe, gold
